Liberdade is a physical theatre company and training provider founded by people with learning disabilities. It’s a company and it’s ours.
The Liberdade story
The name ‘Liberdade’ ( li-ber-dar-jie ) comes from the Brazilian word for freedom. When the project founder was working in Brazil with ‘Opaxoro’ a company of people with learning disabilities he asked them what it meant to be a part of their company, they replied “Liberdade”. Our company has always embraced this ideal and we continue to support others to achieve freedom for themselves.
Where we came from
Liberdade became a company in its own right in April 2008. Since 2003 we have undertaken an extensive apprenticeship scheme run by the Lawnmowers Independent theatre company. We have gained tremendous knowledge and experience during this time developing and delivering training and performance work regionally and nationally.
